Biographie

Roman Dmitriyev rose into prominence in 1969 when he won his first Soviet title, the European title and silver at the World Championships in light-flyweight class. In 1970 Dmitriyev won bronze at the World Championships, while in 1971 he won his second Soviet title and was fifth at the Worlds. In 1972 Dmitriyev won his third Soviet title and also a gold at the 1972 Olympic Games. He won his only World title in 1973. In 1976, Dmitriyev won his fourth Soviet title and won silver at the 1976 Olympics. He won his fifth and sixth Soviet titles in 1979 and 1981, also winning bronze at the 1981 European Championships. After finishing his competitive career in 1981, he worked as a coach with Soviet national team and later with Russian national junior team. He also worked in various positions with Russian Wrestling Federation. In 2008 Dmitriyev was elected to the Respublika Sakha Duma (parliament).
