Rainer Schubert began his athletic career in Württemberg starting for TSV Laichingen and TSV Süßen. In the early 60s he moved to München for his studies and started there for TSV 1860. He graduated shortly before the 1968 Olympics and by 1972 had his own construction company.

From the mid-60s to the early 70s Schubert was one of the world's best 400m hurdlers. He was ranked three times in the world top 10 – 8th in 1968, 6th in 1969, and 7th in 1972. He was a four-time German champion in 1965, and 1967-69. At the 1968 Olympics he set a European record with 49.15 in the heat, but he placed only seventh in the final. At München in 1972 Schubert improved to fifth place.
