A sprinter with a remarkable record in Asia, two-time Olympian Muhammed Anas Yahiya stands out as one of India’s most accomplished track and field stars.
India’s national record holder in the 400m, Anas has won medals at the Asian Games, Asian Championships and is only the third Indian quarter-miler to participate at the Olympics after KM Binu and Milkha Singh, a feat he achieved in Rio 2016.
At Tokyo 2020, Muhammed Anas made his second Olympic appearance, representing India in the 4x400m men’s and mixed relays.
Muhammad Anas was also part of the men’s 4x400m team that broke the Asian record in 2023 and won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Anas, along with his teammates Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Ajmal and Rajesh Ramesh, also finished fifth at the Budapest World Championships for India’s best result in the 4x400m event.
Muhammed Anas grew up in the village of Nilamel in Kerala and it wasn’t a surprise that he took up athletics. His father Yahiya was a state-level athlete and Anas’ first realisation of wanting to take up the sport came when he saw Jamaican legend Usain Bolt tearing through the Beijing track in the 2008 Olympics.
