Biographie

Reid Patterson swam for the University of Georgia, where he won the 1953 NCAA title in the 100 yard freestyle, also winning the AAU title in that event indoors in 1953. He also won eight Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles and set six SEC records. Patterson swam in the 1956 Olympics while on leave from the US Navy. He later coached swimming at Tulane University from 1964-72 and coached age-group swimmers at Metairie (Louisiana) YMCA, before coaching at the Knoxville West Side YMCA from 1973-74. Patterson served as an official at Tennessee’s home swim meets starting in 1973. Patterson is a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, inducted in 1984, and the University of Georgia Circle of Honor, to which he was named in 1997.
