Karl Arnold was an East German weightlifter, starting in the light-heavyweight class at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a member of the mixed German team, placing eighth. Four years later he was third at the European Championships. He then finished fifth at the Mexico City Games, then representing East Germany. Nationally, Arnold won middleweight titles in 1962 and 1963, light-heavyweight titles from 1966-68, and middle-heavyweight titles in 1970 and 1972. In 1969, he won the Baltic Cup. By profession, Arnold trained as a blacksmith, but later became a graduate sports teacher.
