Biographie

George Arthur WEARRING

George Wearring was a cornerstone of the University of Western Ontario’s basketball team from 1946 through 1950, captaining the squad in his final year, and was named a collegiate all-star three times. During his tenure he also spent two years as a centre on the university’s football team and graduated as one of the first three students to acquire a physical education degree from UWO. He then obtained a teaching certificate from the Ontario College of Education and began teaching physical education and coaching football at the Leaside, Ontario high school. He also joined the amateur Toronto Tri-Bells basketball club and was selected as a member of Canada’s delegation to the 1952 Summer Olympic basketball tournament. There the nation survived the qualification round by winning all three of its games, but was eliminated in the following round after failing to win any more matches.

After the Olympics Wearring continued to compete with the Tri-Bells for several years while teaching, coaching several sports, and earning a Master of Science degree from the University of Southern California. He joined the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon’s physical education faculty in 1956 and remained there until 1961, when he began working on a PhD at the University of Michigan. He returned to the University of Western Ontario in 1962 as member of the Faculty of Health Sciences, where he remained until his 1990 retirement. He was made a member of the University of Western Ontario’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
