Biographie

Edmund Piątkowski was a discus thrower whose major title came in winning the 1958 European Championships. A three-time Olympian (1960-68) with a best finish of fifth in 1960, Piątkowski competed four times at the Europeans (1958, 1962, 1966, 1969). In addition to his 1958 gold medal he was fourth in 1962 at Belgrade and 1966 at Budapest. He set a world record of 59.91 in Warszawa in June 1959 and two European discus records with 57.89 in May 1959 and 60.47 in August 1961. Piątkowski was a 13-time Polish champion, winning in 1955, 1957-66, and 1968-69. His wife, Maria Piątkowska-Chojnacka-Ilwicka, also competed at three Olympics (1952, 1960, 1964) as a sprinter/hurdler/long jumper.
