Christophe Dupouey was one of the first mountain bikers to lead France to dominance in that sport. During the 1990s he won five World Cup races, two European Championships, and the 1998 World Championships. In 2006, Dupouey was found to be involved in a widespread doping scandal involving "pot belge", a mixture of cocaine, amphetamine and heroin that was used for performance enhancement on the Kermesse circuit. He served a three-month jail sentence. In early 2009, Dupouey committed suicide, after suffering for several years from depression.
