Biographie

At the end of the 1960s Bernhard Nermerich was one of the best walkers in the world. He participated in the 1968 Olympics as world record holder but was disqualified in the 50 km walk just 7 km from the finish, while he was in second place. Three months before the 1972 Munich Olympics he set another world record but then missed the Games due to an injury. During his sporting career he won 22 German walking titles and participated in three European Championships - although as a young man he had been disqualified by the Army for longer marches.

In 1973 he went into business for himself and was elected as the friendliest taxi driver in his home town of Frankfurt/Main. By decorating his house every Christmas and Easter he collected a lot of money for charitable purposes. Bernhard Nermerich died at the age of 71 from cancer.

Personal Best: 50kmW – 3-59:34 (1972).
