Biographie

Assar RÖNNLUND

Assar Rönnlund was one of Sweden's top cross country skiers in the 1960s. His best year came in 1962, when he won the 15 km and the relay at the World Championships in Zakopane, in addition to a silver medal in the 50 km. He was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal for the best Swedish sports feat of the year for this performance. Rönnlund also medalled at the 1964 Olympics, again winning the relay with the Swedish team, while taking silver individually in the 50 km event. After winning the famous 90-km Vasaloppet in 1967, he won his last championship medal at the 1968 Olympics, a relay silver. After the Olympics, he married fellow Olympic Champion Toini Gustafsson. Throughout his career, Rönnlund also won 14 Swedish titles, and won twice at Holmenkollen. After his career, he became a skiing commentator for Swedish radio.
