East German hammer thrower Reinhard Theimer came in 7th at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and 13th four years later in München. His best results were three medals at the European Championships, silver in 1971 and two bronzes in 1969 and 1974. He also came in third at the 1970 European Cup and was second three years later. Theimer was East German Champion in 1968-70 and 1973-74. In 1974 he threw a world record of 76.60 metres. He trained in electronic welding and later worked as a machine construction engineer.
