East German discus thrower Günter Schaumburg finished 10th at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and seventh at the 1969 European Championships. He never won an East German title, but was runner-up in 1970. Schaumburg first studied journalism, but was then trained as a sports teacher and coach.
At the beginning of the 1980s Schaumburg fell from grace with East German authorities and was degraded to working as a street sweeper. In 1989 he was allowed to immigrate legally to West Germany after eight years of state terror.
