Part of the Wenzel skiing family, originally from Germany, Andreas's fame is somewhat overshadowed by his more successful sister Hanni. He particularly excelled in the combined event, winning the World Championships in that event in 1978. Wenzel placed second again in the 1980 edition (held during the Olympics, but without Olympic status), and also won the combined World Cup in 1984 and 1985, with six of his 14 World Cup wins coming in that discipline. In 1980, Wenzel even won the overall World Cup, and he would finish third in that ranking in three other seasons. Wenzel's second specialty was the giant slalom, winning 3 World cup races, a silver medal at the 1978 World Championships and two Olympic medals in the event. He retired after the Calgary Olympics. In 2007, he became president of the Liechtenstein Skiing Federation.
