French Guiana

Vincent Boudebbouz will carry the Olympic Torch. Here’s his story:

Secondary school PE teacher Vincent chose to practise his profession in one of France's most disadvantaged departments, French Guiana. Having worked in various establishments in Sinnamary, Saint-Georges and Remire-Montjoly, he chose Guiana as he loves a challenge and believes in people.

Committed to his work, Vincent is constantly seeking to offer his students new perspectives and activities, aware that life outside school can be difficult for them. He also spends time volunteering for local media outlet, “Resca”, using his news briefs to share a wealth of information about French Guiana, and conducting interviews with the likes of athlete Gémima Joseph. During his studies, Vincent set up a sports-focused humanitarian project with a few friends from his Sports and Exercise Science and Technology (STAPS) course. Named “L’esquisse d'un sourire” (The Sketch of a Smile), the project’s aim was to collect sports equipment such as balls, rackets, soft toys and bracelets for migrants living in the refugee camps of Kos and Lesbos in Greece.

He travelled to the islands on two separate occasions to distribute the donations and spend time with the refugees, many of whom were children. Vincent embodies true philanthropy. Through his work, he is fully committed to improving life at his school and opening his students’ minds to new horizons. Vincent is also a keen adventurer, and has cycled across part of Turkey. Vincent is guaranteed to bring an extra spark to the Games. He is a personable character with a skill for passing on knowledge and sharing his taste for adventure.
