Stage Preview

Seine-Saint-Denis, the newest French department, is a world within a world with over 130 nationalities present among its populace. The department prides itself on being a powerful driver of arts, culture, sports and social and charitable projects. The torch will endeavour to highlight the diversity and sense of initiative that characterise Seine-Saint-Denis throughout Thursday, 25 July.

The first segment will take it from Noisy-le-Grand to Neuilly-sur-Marne. It will then head to Tremblay-en-France, a "green" town with a forested surface area of 70 hectares. After that, the Olympic torch will advance from Montreuil to Bagnolet. It will follow the course of the Canal de l'Ourcq from Sevran to Bobigny. The next leg will take it from Romainville to La Courneuve. Its next stop will be in Drancy. After a striking passage through Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, it will wrap up the stage in Parc Georges-Valbon.

Celebrations in Georges-Valbon Park

The festivities will draw to a close in Parc Georges-Valbon. Before that, the Olympic torch will complete the last segment from the French National Archives in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine. It will then visit the garden city of Stains on its way to Parc Georges-Valbon. At 400 hectares, this is the third-largest park in Île-de-France. This remarkable site is a green lung near the capital.

Cereals were grown here from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The idea of turning it into a park for the public popped up in the 1930s and became a reality in 1954. It was landscaped over the decades with the addition of paths in the 1960s and dells, lakes and small hills in the 1970s. Parc Georges-Valbon's walking paths, sporting trails and play areas make it quite popular. It is also a gathering point and a celebration site that has hosted the Fête de l'Humanité since 1930. On 25 July, the last torchbearer will light the cauldron in an emotionally charged moment that will wrap up the relay and kick off the festivities in the Parc for the duration of the Games!
