Stage Preview

On 5 July 2024, the Olympic torch will visit the sea-bound cradle of impressionism. It will start its trek around Seine-Maritime in Rouen, one of its three major urban centres. Among other landmarks, the torch will run past Notre-Dame cathedral, the tallest in France at 151 metres, and the Gros-Horloge, an iconic monument of Rouen since 1389. The next segment will take it to Jumièges, famed for its abbey, and Dieppe, a spa town where life is sweet.

The torch will also visit Pierre de Coubertin's childhood home, the recently restored Château de Mirville. After that, it will make a stop on the road in Yvetot before heading to one of the most spectacular natural sites in metropolitan France: Étretat, where relays will take place atop its famous cliffs. The relay stage will end in Le Havre.

Celebrations in Le Havre

Le Havre, which was rebuilt after World War II, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city, blessed with numerous cultural and sporting attractions, will host the end-of-day celebrations. The Olympic torch will start its tour of the city at the Narrow House before moving on to City Hall, inaugurated in 1958. Next up are Porte Océane, a nexus between the city and the sea, and MuMa, the André Malraux Art Museum that houses a vast collection of Impressionist paintings.

It will then blaze past Saint Joseph's Church, rebuilt in the 1950s. The torch will then set course for Le Volcan, an iconic landmark in Le Havre that hosts music, theatre, dance, and circus performances. Its path will take it past Notre-Dame Cathedral, whose history is intertwined with that of the city. The day's fesitivities will reach a crescendo at Esplanade Nelson Mandela in Quai de Southampton, which will host the end-of-day celebrations and the lighting of the cauldron under the keen eye of thousands of locals.
