Anchored on the doorstep of Île-de-France, the Oise department is a magnet for people who want to relax with their families and revel in a pleasant living environment. Oise stands out for its natural spaces that are perfect for a getaway, as well as its rich cultural heritage. The torch will endeavour to highlight this patchwork of sites and landscapes throughout Thursday, 18 July. Its exploration of Oise will start in Compiègne, where it will blaze past Saint James's Parish Church (a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Way of St James) and enter the Château de Compiègne, a former royal and imperial residence. The next stops will be Chiry-Ourscamp and its abbey and then Chantilly, famous for its prestigious château and racecourse. The Olympic torch will also visit Breteuil and then Creil, whose velodrome was built in 1934. From there, it will go to Gerberoy, a medieval village known by the moniker "The Town of Roses". Finally, it will set a course for Beauvais, the terminus of the stage.

Celebrations in Beauvais

The festivities in Oise will continue in Beauvais. A thriving city blessed with a rich historical heritage, Beauvais is also known for its international airport and dynamism. The Olympic torch will begin its tour of the city at Maladrerie Saint-Lazare, a lazaretto built in the 12th century. It will then zip past Saint Peter's Cathedral, a colossal building with the tallest Gothic choir in the world (48.5 metres). After that it will pay a visit to MUDO, the Oise Museum found next door. This former palace is home to a wealth of 19th-century collections. The final leg of the day will take the torch to the seat of the department. The forecourt will host the lighting of the cauldron to wrap up the end-of-day celebrations.
