Olympic Torch Relay Route
Stage Preview
With 2,263 kilometres of coastline, Finistère is the most sea-bound department in France, meaning the Olympic torchbearers will breathe in the crisp sea air throughout the Olympic flame's visit to the department on Friday, 7 June. The journey will begin in Port-la-Forêt. Standing opposite the Glénan Islands, this harbour welcomes thousands of sailors and the world's best navigators, who train here every day. Next on the route is Quimper, with its charming historic town centre. The Olympic torch will then visit the Pointe de la Torche, a peninsula wildly popular among surfers. From there, it will move on to Plougastel-Daoulas, famous for its strawberries, and the Pointe du Raz, a rocky promontory that plunges into the Atlantic. The torchbearers will showcase Notre-Dame des Naufragés, a 6-metre-tall sculpture at the tip of the Pointe du Raz. The Olympic torch will then climb Mont Saint-Michel-de-Brasparts, which juts into the sky from the Monts d'Arrée. It will also visit the chapel on top of this ancient hill, which offers a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding peat bogs and Lake Brennilis. Finally, it will wrap up its visit to Finistère in Brest.
Celebrations in Brest
Brest will host the end-of-day celebrations for the torch's visit to Finistère. The city, which sees itself as the "Capital of the Oceans", is home to one of the largest maritime research communities in the world and thousands of students who study the trades of the sea. The torch will begin its tour of Brest in port du moulin blanc, one of the most spectacular aquariums on the planet with over a thousand species in its tanks. From there, it will visit the area around the Pont de Recouvrance, which dominates the arsenal and the military port, and the 14th-century Tour Tanguy. The torch will then go to Brest Castle, which houses the National Navy Museum. Then it will be time to head to the Quai Malbert, which will host the last celebrations and the cauldron lighting ceremony at the end of the day. Right after these celebrations, the Olympic torch will depart Metropolitan France from Brest. It will board the Maxi Banque Populaire XI, an ocean-racing multihull owned by Groupe BPCE (a partner of the Paris 2024 Olympic Torch Relay) to cross the Atlantic and reach the Antilles.
