Stage Preview

On Wednesday, 5 June, the Olympic torch will visit the pristine and verdant department of Loire-Atlantique, part of which is oriented towards the Atlantic Ocean. The stage is unusual because it brings together several municipalities and a community of municipalities, all of which have thrown their weight behind the Relay to create a lasting memory for their inhabitants.

The Olympic torch will begin its visit of the department in Saint-Sébastien-du-Loire, where the Nantes bourgeoisie started to build second homes in the 17th century. After that, it will head to the Pays d'Ancenis community of municipalities in Ingrandes-le-Fresne-sur-Loire, which stands as a monument to blooming port activities on the banks of the Loire. The next leg will take it to Vertou, a town located on the doorstep of the Nantes vineyards which is also the starting point of a plethora of hikes through nature. The torch will then set a course for Vallons-de-L'Erdre, a green oasis among lakes and forests, and Basse-Goulaine, an attractive town where urban landscapes meet the countryside, before reaching Ligné and visiting its 13th-century Saint Maturinus's Chapel. La Baule-Escoublac will be the last stop of this stage.

Celebrations in La Baule

La Baule-Escoublac is famous for its laid-back atmosphere and unique setting, with a long sandy beach that borders the Atlantic Ocean. It also has a huge natural pine forest, elegant family villas, lively shopping streets and restaurants on the sand. For decades, La Baule-Escoublac has been the ideal destination for many holidaymakers eager to recharge their batteries.

This town, whose population swells from 16,500 to 180,000 in the summer, will host the next leg of the Olympic Torch Relay. The torch will run down the seafront, which commands a view of the largest bay in Europe. Following its tour of the town, the torch will head to Place des Salines. Locals will flock to this square, located a stone's throw away from the homonymous sports complex, for the celebration. The cauldron will be lit to end this amazing day of festivities in style.
