Olympic Torch Relay Route
Stage Preview
Barcelonnette, designated as the iconic location by Région Sud for the passage of the Olympic Flame.
From the pristine splendour of the Alps to the art of living in Provence, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department has a distinct allure. This is what the Olympic torch will showcase from the start of its journey on Saturday, 11 May. It will visit Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir Chapel in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. It will also climb to the citadel in Sisteron before heading to the Rocher de la Baume.
From there, the torch will move on to Digne-les-Bains to explore the Haute-Provence UNESCO Global Geopark. Historical heritage is on the agenda too, as the torch will shine a light on the Savoy Fort in Colmars-les-Alpes and Notre-Dame-du-Bourguet Cathedral in Forcalquier. Next, the Région Sud will use the torch to shine a light on the town of Barcelonnette, where it will pass by the Mexican villas in the Ubaye valley, built in the 19th century. The stage will draw to a close in Manosque.
Celebrations in Manosque
Aerial view of Manosque, France
Manosque, the biggest city in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, will roll out the red carpet for the Olympic torch and end-of-day celebrations. The torch will start its tour of this ancient Provencal town in the south, at Les Iscles Comprehensive School. It will then proceed to Moulin de l'Olivette, a cooperative famous for its olive oil. The Olympic torch will move on to the Jean Giono Centre, which was the residence and haven of the celebrated writer from 1930 to 1970. It will stop by the Porte de la Saunerie, which dates back to the late 14th century, before running down Promenade Aubert Millot up to the Porte du Soubeyran, built in the northern part of the medieval wall in the 13th century. It will then be time to go to the celebration site at the Jean Salobert Stadium; this temple of rugby union will host the lighting of the cauldron to end the day on a high note.
