YOG on the Road… to Ice Hockey Skills Challenge

The YOG on the Road team struggle to stand up on the ice, let alone skate on it at speed with the aim of hitting a tiny puck into a 180cm-wide net blocked by a padding-clad goalkeeper!

So it is no understatement to say that we were in awe of the 44 awesome young ice hockey players from around the world who made their way to Vierumaki, Finland, this summer for an intensive Global Qualification Competition for the new event ‘Skills Challenge’.

Involving four key skills areas - weaving, transition, skating and shooting - and six individual tests, 'Skills Challenge' will be seen for the first time at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria next January!

All 44 amazing athletes were invited to compete in Finland after coming top of Skills Challenge Competitions in their own countries. As a result, 30 players (15 boys and 15 girls) have now officially qualified for Innsbruck 2012! And, from what we saw of the standard on show in Finland, it’s going to be a high-speed, high-thrill, high-adrenaline event for the players and the spectators!
