Pedro Barros laid down an early marker of intent after qualifying in first at the close of the men's quarter-finals of WST Rome Park World Championships 2023 on Friday (6 October).
Energised by a lively afternoon crowd at The Spot Skatepark, the 28-year-old Brazilian skateboarder took the top spot with a score of 84.71 on his second run and held on as the rest of the field took their turn.
Qualifying in second, just behind the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, was Asian Games 2023 men's park silver medallist Nagahara Yuro.
The Japanese maintained his form from open qualifiers putting down two 84-plus runs to book his place in the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier, streaming live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com from Saturday 7 October.
Leading the five riders from the USA through to tomorrow's competition phase was Tom Schaar who took third with 84.11. Gavin Bottger finished in fifth, Jagger Eaton in ninth, JD Sanchez in 10th and Tate Carew in 13th.
WST Rome Park World Championships is doubling as an Olympic Qualifier with ranking points for the upcoming Games up for grabs in addition to the world titles.
The competition will continue today with the women’s quarter-finals beginning at 17:35 (UTC+2).
