Three Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers - Gyanender, Ravi and Sonu - were eliminated before the medal and repechage rounds at the World Wrestling Championships 2021 in Oslo, Norway on Friday.

Gyanender, competing in the 60kg division, won his first bout of the day - beating Jinwoong Jung of South Korea 4-3 in the qualification round.

However, he was eliminated after a 3-2 loss to Japan’s Ayata Suzuki in the round of 16.

Both Ravi and Sonu were eliminated in the qualification round of their respective weight categories.

Ravi lost by technical superiority to South Korea’s Jewoo Park in the 97kg. In the 130kg, Sonu also lost by technical superiority to Radoslav Georgiev of Bulgaria.

In wrestling, if a competitor builds up a 10-point lead over their opponent at any stage of the bout, they win by technical superiority.

None of the Indian wrestlers’ opponents made it to the semi-finals and so, the Indians could not make it to the repechage rounds.

India have won two medals at the World Wrestling Championships 2021 thus far.

Youngster Anshu Malik made history by winning silver in the women’s 57kg freestyle category, making her the first Indian woman to do so.

India’s Sarita Mor won bronze in the women’s 59kg freestyle. None of the men’s freestyle wrestlers won a medal for India.
