India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav finished fifth in the women’s 49kg category at the IWF World Weightlifting Championships 2024 in Mahama, Bahrain on Saturday.

The 21-year-old Gyaneshwari, making her debut at the World Weightlifting Championships, lifted a total of 182kg - 80kg in snatch and 102kg in clean and jerk.

Ri Song-gum of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea bagged the gold medal with a total of 213kg. Xiang Linxiang of the People’s Republic of China finished second and the Philippines’ Rosegie Ramos came third.

Gyaneshwari faced a challenging start in the snatch event, falling short of her personal best of 83kg in her first two attempts but managed a successful lift of 80kg in her final attempt.

Later in the clean and jerk, the Indian weightlifter began with a successful attempt at 99kg and bettered it to 102kg in her next chance. A failed third lift meant Gyaneshwari finished with a total of 182kg, 4kg short of her personal best.

Gyaneshwari Yadav was competing in the 49kg category in the absence of Mirabai Chanu, who skipped the meet to focus on long-term rehabilitation.

India has two more weightlifters left to compete at the World Weightlifting Championships 2024.

Bindyarani Devi will feature in the women’s 55kg event on Sunday while Ditimoni Sonowal will lift in Group C of the 64kg on Tuesday.
