Niklas Edin claimed a seventh world title as Sweden defeated Canada 6-5 in the final of the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship in Schaffenhausen, Switzerland on Sunday (6 April).

Swedish skip Edin produced an inspired final stone in the extra end to claim the dramatic win, live on Olympic Channel.

It was the third time Edin had beaten Canada skip Brad Gushue in a world final having previously done so in 2018 and 2022 in Las Vegas.

Dramatic men's final

The Swedes drew first blood as Edin made a routine draw for two in the second end. They then stole one in the third to go 3-0 ahead.

Back came Canada in the next end as a controlled takeout from Gushue with the hammer scored two.

Sweden scored singles in the sixth and the eighth - either side of a Canadian single - to lead 5-3.

In the ninth, Edin left his final stone on the button and open to a takeout which would result in a double for the North American giants.

Gushue did not miss the opportunity to leave the teams tied at 5-5 going into the 10th end.

With Sweden in possession of the hammer, Canada set up centre guards aplenty before calling a time out midway through the end as the tension mounted even further.

Mark Nichols played a fine draw with his first stone, freezing it onto Sweden's near the button before Oskar Eriksson removed the two Canada centre guards.

Nichols then put up a new centre guard which Eriksson took out, and Gushue did the same with Edin then taking a time out.

Despite lying shot, the reigning Olympic champions were in trouble, and Edin drew just inside the top of the house.

With his final stone, Gushue played the cannon to perfection which left Canada lying three and Edin needing a perfect draw to win the match.

And a perfect draw is what he got, curling his rock from way out wide to just inside the closest Canada stone for a sensational victory.

It looked tight, but Edin knew he had delivered and celebrated with his teammates after yet another triumph.

For Gushue, it was more disappointment as his rink took silver for the fourth World Championship in a row.

On his winning draw, Edin told World Curling, "I was confident to throw good material but, at the same time, you're not really sure what the path is going to do. The same thing for the sweepers, they can't see the line. The frost out there was a little tricky so that's probably one of the worst shots to win this one, especially after having that lead, but we still felt confident it would be close.

"We played so well the whole week - obviously, it was going to come down to a tough one - but also the struggles from last year, some surgery and not playing as a whole team, losing out in the quarters. A lot of doubts came in at that point, but now we've just played the best event we've ever played so super proud of the team."

Scotland miss out on a medal

Earlier, Italy produced an incredible late comeback to take bronze against 2023 champions Scotland.

Bruce Mouat's rink led 6-3 after nine ends, but Joel Retornaz's controlled takeout with the last stone scored three to take the match into an extra end.

Mouat had the hammer in the 11th, but just failed with a hit and roll as Italy stole one to win 7-6.
