Selva P Thirumaran won India’s third medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2022 after he clinched a silver in the men’s triple jump in Cali, Colombia on Friday.

With a personal best leap of 16.15m, Selva P Thirumaran finished behind Jaydon Hibbert of Jamaica, who won the gold medal with a championship record effort of 17.27m. Viktor Morozov of Estonia took the bronze with 16.13m.

From Selva P Thirumaran’s six attempts in the triple jump, only the first three were valid and the rest fouls. The 17-year-old’s medal-winning effort came in the second jump - the other two measured 16.11m and 16.09m.

India earlier won a bronze medal in the 4x400 mixed relay and a silver in the women’s 400m with Rupal Chaudhary.

The Indian women's team has qualified for the 4x400m relay finals with a national U20 record time of 3:34.18 and will be in action on the last day of the meet on Saturday.

The Indian women’s 4x400m relay team comprises Summy, Priya Mohan, Rajitha Kunja and Rupal Chaudhary.

Priya Mohan was a part of the silver-medal-winning 4x400 mixed relay team in Cali. Rupal Chaudhary has already made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the world championships.

A 31-member Indian team was sent to Cali for the junior world championships.

India finished with three medals last year in Nairobi - two silvers and a bronze.

India have now won 10 medals, including two golds, at the World Athletics U20 Championships. Javelin throw ace Neeraj Chopra was the first Indian to win a world athletics U20 title at Bydgoszcz 2016 in Poland. Hima Das also won gold in the women’s 400m at Tampere 2018 in Finland.
