Summer McIntosh captured her second gold medal of the World Aquatics Championships 2023 on Sunday (30 July), setting a meet record of 4 minutes, 27.11 seconds in the women’s 400-metre individual medley.
McIntosh finished comfortably ahead of American runner-up Katie Grimes (4:31.41) in defending her title. Australia’s Jenna Forrester took bronze.
McIntosh - who also helped Canada to a bronze in the women’s 4x100m medley relay on this night, the last race of the entire championships - posted the second fastest time of her career despite a grueling seven-race program in the past week.
“Going into tonight I just wanted to see how hard I could push myself since the 400m individual medley is such a hard event,” the 16-year-old said.
“I’m just learning more and more each time I swim. I think a lot of it comes back to my training.
“I try to be as consistent as possible in training because that’s what gets consistent results at meets like this.”
