The quarter-finals of Wimbledon 2024 get underway on Tuesday (9 July) as some of the world’s best tennis players begin to face off in the final eight.

While the big hitters in the men’s singles draw, including Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, have made it through, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan is the only top-five seeded player to reach the women’s singles quarter-final.

With just about two weeks between the conclusion of Wimbledon and the opening of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, players competing in both competitions will be keen to build up confidence going into the Games, despite the challenging surface change.

The Wimbledon order of play is announced the evening prior to the match, with players allocated to one of the 18 match courts including the iconic Centre Court. The women’s singles final is scheduled for 13 July, the day before the men’s singles final.

World number one Sinner has an enticing quarter-final clash against fifth seed Daniil Medvedev, who he beat to win his first Grand Slam earlier this year at the 2024 Australian Open. The Italian is in fine form, having reached the quarter-final stage in every tournament he has competed in this season, going on to win four of them.

After a four-set win over Frenchman Ugo Humbert, third seed Alcaraz will take on Tommy Paul of the USA to face the winner of Sinner and Medvedev’s meeting. ‘Carlitos’ comes off the back of winning the 2024 French Open at the Stade Roland Garros, where he will return in July to compete at Paris 2024.

Sinner is not the only Italian man still chasing Wimbledon glory. Lorenzo Musetti has reached his first grand slam quarter-final after coming back from a set down to overcome Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, and will face Taylor Fritz (USA) in the next round.

Ninth seed Alex de Minaur will meet Novak Djokovic after he fought through a four-set match to prevail against Arthur Fils.

Over in the women’s singles draw it remains as wide open as it has been all tournament long, with only two of the top eight seeds making it to this stage.

The standout story so far has been written by qualifier Lulu Sun of New Zealand, who stunned eighth seed Zheng Qinwen before defeating home favourite Emma Raducanu in the round of 16 tie.

Sun will take on Croatia’s Donna Vekic for a place in the final four, aiming to be the first woman qualifier since Alexandra Stevenson in 1999 to reach the Wimbledon women’s singles semi-finals.

It is an Italian affair at Wimbledon this year, as Jasmine Paolini makes it a record three Italian players in the singles quarter-finals at the same grand slam event. She takes on Emma Navarro, who stunned world number two Coco Gauff in straight sets in an all-American tie.

The highest ranked player left in the women’s singles competition is Rybakina, whose round of 16 opponent Anna Kalinskaya had to retire at 6-3 3-0 down. The Kazakh will play Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist targeting a third Wimbledon semi-final in five years.

Elsewhere, Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko will play Czechia’s Barbora Krejcikova.
