Who are the newcomers to the USWNT squad for the 2024 SheBelieves Cup?
The annual SheBelieves Cup takes place in April, hosted by the United States.
The US Women's National Team (USWNT) is joined each year by some of football’s best international squads, and the 2024 edition features Brazil, Japan, and USA's local rivals Canada.
Held from April 6 to April 9, this edition of the tournament will be different to previous outings.
It will consist of a four-game format with two semi-finals, a third-place play-off and the final.
This week the USWNT named their 23-player roster that will be competing for the six-time champions, with a few fresh faces involved.
Catarina Macario is the headline inclusion for interim boss Twila Kilgore, having returned just recently for Chelsea following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
But who are the two new additions to the squad?
USWNT name two newcomers for SheBelieves Cup 2024
Lily Yohannes (16, Ajax)
Lily Yohannes’s inclusion in a USA squad felt like only a matter of time, with the Ajax midfielder being touted by both her homeland and the Netherlands, where she moved aged 10.
The last time the USWNT called up a 16-year-old to the senior squad was in 2017 when Sophia Smith joined a training camp.
With Smith now a bonafide starter for her national team and among one of the most exciting forwards in the women's game, it bodes well for the progression of her new teammate.
Playing for the USA comes with its own pressure, something Yohannes has been accustomed to in her time at Ajax.
This season saw her become the youngest player ever to start a UEFA Women’s Champions League match, starring in all six of the Dutch club’s group stages.
She also started in their quarter-final first-leg clash against Chelsea, where she seemed to have made an impression on incoming USWNT boss Emma Hayes.
If the teenager plays in the SheBelieves Cup, it won’t tie her to the USA as it is just a friendly competition, meaning both the Netherlands and the USA are still both in the running for securing her services permanently.
Eva Gaetino (21, PSG)
Eva Gaetino also plays her football in Europe, for French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
The 21-year-old was tipped to do well in the 2024 NWSL draft but decided to forego it and instead sign for the Parisians.
There, she reunited with college teammate and fellow American Korbin Albert, the two playing together at Notre Dame.
Her call-up comes on the back of her fine performance for PSG in the UWCL quarter-final against BK Häcken on what was her competition debut.
A goal in that game saw her become the youngest American to score in the tournament.
The defender has plenty of competition to contend with at the back and will look to make an impression for the USWNT ahead of this year's Olympic Games in Paris.
