Usain Bolt: Why the Olympic Games are 'such a big thing'
What makes the Olympic Games so special?
For the fastest man alive, Usain Bolt, one thing above all stands out.
“I think because it brings so much sports together. It really helps people to see the different disciplines and see how hard other athletes work to get to the level," Bolt told Olympics.com at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid.
“I think that's why it's such a big thing, because it's a group, and everybody's all-inclusive. That's why I think it makes it special."
The Jamaican eight-time Olympic gold medallist, famed for his record-breaking exploits, won’t be on the track come Paris 2024 having retired back in 2017, but the star says he relishes now being an Olympic spectator.
“I get to go to different events now. I can go watch swimming. I can go watch basketball, football, everything. I mean, that's what I'm most excited about,” Bolt said.
“Throughout my years, I've always just had to watch track and field. So now I get a chance to go see everybody in life."
Pressed on what event at the Olympics in France has caught his eye, the sprint legend didn’t hesitate as he picked out the men’s basketball tournament as a must-watch.
With the United States having named a 12-strong roster filled to the brim with NBA star power, including LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, Bolt predicts the event is going to be something special.
“For me, I look forward to watching the basketball game. I think the US has a point to prove, and then there's going to be a lot of stars on the team, so I'm excited to see how the basketball will turn out.”
