Tommy Fynn held off Horigome Yuto to emerge as the top finalist for the inaugural Uprising Tokyo event on Saturday (27 May).
Fynn, the oldest skater among the 25 semi-finalists at 34, unleashed a score of 91.88 on his second run, securing the first spot in Sunday’s final of the street affair at Ariake Arena.
The Australian was the only one to clear 90 on this night. Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Horigome all but sealed his place in the final with an 89.46 on his opening run, experimenting with his remaining two skates.
Netsuke Kairi took third place (89.06), followed by Carlos Ribeiro (88.68) in fourth, with Shirai Sora rounding out the top five (85.54) among the 10 finalists.
“I didn’t want to get comfortable knowing we had three runs today and I went for it from the first run,” Netsuke said. “I’m changing my routine a little bit tomorrow but I hope I can get everything right.
“I managed to reach the final. I’m going all in. I’m out to win the title.”
On the women’s side, Akama Rizu left it to her last run to go through as the top finalist with a 76.82 followed by Uemura Aoi (76.16) and Onishi Nanami (75.75).
Oda Yumeka came in fourth on 74.6 and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Nakayama Funa advanced after finishing in fifth position (72.64). Thirteen-year-old Yoshizawa Coco, who was the No. 1 qualifier a day earlier, was seventh (68.05).
