With Europe’s top leagues wrapping up following a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian football fans will now see the European big guns return to competition for the coveted UEFA Champions League trophy this weekend.

The round-of-16 stage was underway when the pan-European competition had to be stalled, following Atletico Madrid’s win over defending champions Liverpool on March 12. The competition resumes from thereafter in the early hours of Saturday morning (IST).

Watch Real Madrid take on Manchester City

Reigning Spanish La Liga champions Real Madrid will be travelling to the Etihad Stadium aiming to overturn a 2-1 deficit against a Manchester City side, who are keen to end their season with silverware after ending as runner-up to Liverpool in the English Premier League.

Pep Guardiola, whose men had registered a crucial victory at the Santiago Bernabeu in February with Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne scoring for the visitors, will look to get the job done on their home turf.

Elsewhere, reigning Italian Serie A champions Juventus host Lyon in the second leg, as they trail the French side by a goal, courtesy of a tap-in by Lucas Tousart at the Olympique Lyonnais stadium back in February.

With Ligue 1 suspended on March 12, before Paris Saint-Germain were declared champions on April 30, the French outfit has lacked competitive matches over the last few months and will be raring to go.

FC Barcelona will host Serie A side Napoli at Camp Nou, looking to use their home advantage in sealing the tie after Lionel Messi and Co. had managed a 1-1 draw in Naples earlier this year.

Losing the title race to arch-rivals Real Madrid post-lockdown, the Catalans aim to end their season with a European trophy. Finishing seventh in the Serie A, Napoli, on the other hand, have one last chance of qualifying for the European top-flight for next season.

Bayern Munich favourites

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich will be the favourites to advance to the quarter-finals after they had managed a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season.

While overturning a three-goal deficit against the Bavarians is an uphill task, Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have already secured a spot in the Champions League next season by finishing fourth in the Premier League.
