Alison dos Santos set the new men's 400m hurdles records for both South America and the World Athletics Championships as the Brazilian eased to the gold medal in 46.29 seconds on Tuesday (19 July 2022).

The Olympic bronze medallist beat out Americans Rai Benjamin and Trevor Bassitt as world record holder and Olympic champion Karsten Warholm faded hard after a quick start.

There was also a shock result in the men's 1500m as Great Britain's Jake Wightman, entering the race as the second-fastest man in the distance this year, sprinted away from favourite Jakob Ingebrigtsen to win gold.

Slovenia's Kristjan Ceh re-wrote the Championship record en route to winning gold in the men's discus, while Australia claimed their first gold of the Championships through Eleanor Patterson in the women's high jump.
