There will be 48 events, consisting of 23 each for men and women as well as two mixed events (the 4x400m mixed relay and the 35km mixed team race walk), mainly at the iconic Stade de France in Paris, France.

Three venues will be used for the road events – Hotel de Ville and Les Invalides for the start and finish of the marathon races and Pont d’lena for race walks.

The track and field competition at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 produced medallists from 43 nations.

Below, we take a closer look at the stars to watch out for in Paris, a full schedule, and how to watch the action.

Track and Field stars to watch at Paris 2024 Olympics

As always, the men's and women’s 100m sprints will be among the most highly anticipated events at Paris 2024.

The American duo of Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson are much-fancied to win their first Olympic titles in the men's and women's 100 respectively.

Lyles will be up against Italy's reigning Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs in the 100m and a flurry of stars including teammate Erriyon Knighton, and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo in 200 as he goes for the sprint double.

Richardson heads to her first Olympics as the favourite in the absence of two-time defending champion Elaine Thompson, but she is still having to contend with other Jamaican stars in Shericka Jackson - aiming for her first individual gold at the Games - and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who is looking to sign off on a high at her fifth and final Olympics.

Reigning Olympic champion Armand Mondo Duplantis is in with a great chance of setting a new world record in men’s pole vault, as is Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the women’s 400m hurdles.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon is targeting an unprecedented treble in the 1500m, and Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who secured a World Record in July 2024, could improve that mark again.

Sifan Hassan is likely to repeat her long-distance treble at the Olympics in the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m, while Olympic gold medallists Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele are set for a showdown for the ages in the men’s marathon.
