India’s Manu Bhaker and Yashaswini Singh Deswal failed to clinch a spot in the 10m air pistol women’s final at the Tokyo Olympics.
Manu Bhaker finished 12th in the qualifying round with a score of 575-14x while Yashaswini Singh Deswal ended in the 13th spot with 574-11x. Only the top eight made it to the finals.
Former world champion Ranxin Jiang of China finished top in the qualifying round with 587-23x. Greece’s Anna Korakaki, the Rio 2016 bronze medallist in 10m air pistol, finished second with 585-28x while ROC’s Vitalina Batsarashkina finished third with 582-19x.
France’s Celine Goberville was eighth with 577-15x.
Taking aim at the Asaka Shooting Range, Manu Bhakar started well with a solid score of 98 with her first series of 10 shots and joined the leading pack.
The 19-year-old Manu Bhaker, however, lost ground after a brief issue with her gun. The world No. 2 managed 95, 94 and 95 in series two, three and four respectively.
A 98 in the fifth series gave Manu Bhaker some hope of qualifying as the Indian pushed for a spot in the final series. With her last shot, the Indian needed an inner 10 to force a shootoff for the eighth spot but could only manage an eight.
In stark contrast to Manu Bhaker, Yashaswini Singh Deswal, the current world No. 1 in women’s 10m air pistol, faltered in her opening series with a score of 94.
The 24-year-old Yashaswini regained some momentum with a 98, 97 and 96 in series two, four and five. She needed a near-perfect final series to have any chance of making the cut but had to settle for an average 95.
