After over two weeks of scintillating sporting action, Tokyo 2020 finally comes to an end on Sunday, August 8. The Olympics closing ceremony will officially signal the close of the Summer Games.

Like the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony, too, will be held at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.

Wrestler Bajrang Punia will be India’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony’s parade of nations. Manpreet Singh, captain of the bronze medal-winning Indian men’s hockey team, and ace boxer MC Mary Kom had shared the honours during the opening ceremony.

The cultural event of the closing ceremony will be centred around the ‘worlds we share’ theme, which expresses the idea that each of us inhabits their own world.

The artistic performances at the closing ceremony will showcase cultures of both Japan – the host nation of the ongoing Summer Games – and France – the country which will host the next Olympics in 2024.

One of the highlights of the event will be the Antwerp Ceremony. A tradition at every closing ceremony since the Antwerp 1920 Summer Games, the ceremony symbolizes the official passing of the torch from the current host nation to the next.

This year, Yuriko Koike, the governor of Tokyo, will pass on the Olympic flag to IOC President Thomas Bach, who will hand it over to Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris.

The French national flag will be hosted at the stadium after the presentation with the French national anthem playing signalling the countdown to Paris 2024.
