Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom of India will take on Ingrit Valencia of Colombia at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan arena in the Tokyo Olympics women’s flyweight (51kg) round of 16 on Thursday afternoon.
Mary Kom had won bronze at London 2012 while the Colombian clinched the bronze at Rio 2016.
Ingrit Valencia received a bye into the round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympics while Mary Kom defeated Miguelina Hernandez of the Dominican Republic 4-1 in the round of 32.
Both Ingrit Valencia, aged 32, and Mary Kom, aged 38, are the first female boxers from their respective countries to have won Olympic medals.
Mary Kom, unseeded at Tokyo 2020, is ranked No. 7 in the world in the 51kg category while third-seed Ingrit Valencia is ranked No. 11.
The last time the two met, Mary Kom beat Ingrit Valencia 5:0 in the quarter-finals of the 2019 world championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
While Ingrit Valencia secured a Tokyo Olympics berth through her IOC Boxing Task Force ranking, Mary Kom came through the 2020 Olympic qualification tournament in Amman, Jordan.
Mary Kom is among the four female Indian boxers competing at the Tokyo Olympics. The others are Pooja Rani (75 kg), Simranjit Kaur (60 kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg).
A semi-final spot in boxing will guarantee a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
