Tokyo 2020 Offers Olympic Tickets For 2,020 Yen
The affordable price will be available for certain groups
Tokyo 2020 organisers have decided to offer tickets for 2,020 yen (about 18 U.S. dollars) to mark the year of the Games.
The Organising Committee has agreed, that the low-cost tickets, for preliminary rounds as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, will be available for certain groups.
Children, senior citizens and people with disabilities stand to benefit from the decision with the criteria for purchase to be decided at a later date.
“We hope that a diverse audience enjoy the Olympics and fans generate a frenzied atmosphere in the stadium”, Sadahiko Kano, the head of the ticketing strategy panel, was quoted as saying by Kyodo.
With just over two years to go to the Olympic Games in Japan’s capital city, Tokyo 2020 officials are expected to give a more detailed outline of ticket prices on July 20.
Ticket sales are scheduled to start in the spring of 2019.
More Sports on Offer
It’s not the first time that the host city has released low-cost tickets. London 2012 organisers offered £20.12 (about 30 U.S. dollars) tickets to ensure accessibility for all.
The Tokyo 2020 Games will comprise of 33 sports – five more than Rio 2016 – including four sports making its Olympic debut, namely Karate, Skateboarding, Sport Climbing and Surfing.
More than 11,000 athletes and 206 nations are expected to participate in the second edition of the Games in Tokyo where 339 gold medal will be on offer.
Landmarks as Backdrops
The new National Olympic Stadium is currently being constructed on the site of the original 1964 Olympic Stadium in the heart of the city. It will host the Opening and Closing ceremonies as well as the athletic events.
Several landmarks will also serve as venues for the Games including the Imperial Palace Gardens which will host the race walking events.
Fans of road cycling meanwhile will be treated to the sights of Mount Fuji with the race set to finish at the Fuji International Speedway.
