Following the Yonex Thailand Open, which saw the entire Indian badminton contingent's challenge end as in the second round, PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and Co. will seek redemption at the Toyota Thailand Open from January 19.

It’s the second Thailand Open added to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) calendar, keeping in mind the majority of the 2020 events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Watch live streaming of Thailand Open badminton in India.

Considering their poor run in the recently-concluded first edition of Thailand Open, Indian badminton players will be desperate for a good run this time and qualify for the season-concluding BWF World Tour Finals in Bangkok later this month.

Reigning women's world champion and Rio 2016 silver-medallist PV Sindhu, faltered in the first round at the last tournament, going down against Denmark's Mia Blichfeldt. Sindhu faces local favourite Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the opening round.

Busanan, interestingly, was responsible for knocking out Saina Nehwal from the second round of the Thailand Open last week. Saina had beaten Malaysia's Kisona Selvaduray in the first round.

Saina Nehwal, a bronze medallist at the London 2012 Olympics, meanwhile faces a tough first round fixture against a more established Thai badminton player - world No. 5 Ratchanok Intanon.

In men's singles, there are concerns over Kidambi Srikanth and Parupalli Kashyap's fitness.

While the former world No. 1 Srikanth had to withdraw from his second-round fixture last week due to a calf injury, Kashyap could only make it to the third game of his first-round match before retiring hurt owing to a muscle pull.

This time, in their opening rounds, Kidambi Srikanth faces local player Sitthikom Thammasin while Parupalli Kashyap will face Denmark's Rasmus Gemke.

In men’s doubles, the top-ranked pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty begin their campaign against fellow Indians Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy.
