Gianmarco Tamberi and Arianna Errigo will be the flag-bearers of the Italian delegation at the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) announced the decision on Monday (22 April).

Tamberi won gold at Tokyo 2020 in the high jump as only the second Italian in history.

Fencer Errigo, who gave birth to twins last year, claimed Olympic gold in the team foil event at the Olympic Games London 2012 and is a three-time Olympic medallist.

It is the second consecutive time that Italy has selected two flag-bearers. In Tokyo, cyclist Elia Viviani and shooter Jessica Rossi were waving ‘il Tricolore’ at the Opening Ceremony.

“Representing the Italian expedition at the Paris 2024 Games fills me with pride,” Tamberi wrote on his Instagram. “I hope with all my heart that I can live up to this role for Italy, and I promise that I will do everything to do so. I'm living a dream."

“I am proud and almost in disbelief of the joy I feel,” Errigo told the Italian Fencing Federation. “My children were only four months old last July, when I returned to the stage at the World Championships in Milan, winning a team gold and an individual silver. A demonstration to myself, and to all women that you can be mothers and high-level athletes.”

The Opening Ceremony at Paris 2024 will take place on July 26.
