UAE Emirates cyclist Tadej Pogacar put on a finishing masterclass to claim the 2021 Il Lombardia on Saturday (9 October).
The Tokyo 2020 road cycling bronze medallist held his nerve in a sprint finish with Italian Fausto Masnada to cross the line first in a time of 6 hours 1 minute and 39 seconds.
Masnada of team Deceuninck-Quick Step settled for second place a length-and-a-half back, while British rider Adam Yates of Ineos Grenadiers completed the podium in third.
Slovenian Pogagar launched his attack with approximately 40km left of the 239km route from Como to Bergamo in Italy.
The 23-year-old’s aggressive move was a masterstroke. While Masnada was able to close the gap towards the end, he ultimately had too much work to do.
Pogacar’s victory means he is the first rider since Eddy Merckx in 1972 to win the Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the Tour de France and Il Lombardia in the same season.
