Summer McIntosh won't swim 800m freestyle at Paris, ending hopes of clash with Katie Ledecky, Ariarne Titmus
Four-time world championships gold medal-winning swimmer Summer McIntosh of Canada isn't registered to compete in the 800m freestyle at the upcoming Canadian Olympic trials, according to a report from Reuters.
Bypassing the event at the trials means that at the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024, the 17-year-old phenom won't challenge American Katie Ledecky, who has won three Olympic titles in a row in the event, or Australian Ariarne Titmus, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist in the event.
McIntosh is the only swimmer to have beaten Ledecky in the event in 13 years, having bested her at an event earlier this year.
The Canadian, who is the 2023 world champ in the 200m butterfly and 400m medley, will still have a busy schedule despite skipping the 800m. At the trials, she'll swim in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle, the 200m and 400m individual medley, the 100m backstroke and the 200m butterfly.
She is the world record holder in the 400m medley.
