Europe's best sport climbers have descended on Germany to compete in eight medal events at the 2022 European Championships.

From 11-18 August, approximately 200 athletes from 26 nations will be in action, for an event which is part of the European Championships Munich 2022 mulitsport event.

The sport climbing competition involves four disciplines - boulder, lead, speed, and combination boulder & lead. The combination is a European champs first and will also feature in the next Olympic summer Games at Paris 2024.

The eight-days of climbing will see 16 people crowned European champions at Konigsplatz, the iconic square in the heart of Munich city centre. It also marks the third time that the IFSC Climbing European Championships are hosted in the Bavarian capital.

Athletes to watch at Sport Climbing European Championships Munich 2022

Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions Janja Garnbret of Slovenia and Spain's Alberto Ginés will be ones to watch in Munich.

Garnbret is currently ranked number one in the women's World Cup rankings for lead, with Laura Rogora fourth. The 21-year-old Italian is having a strong season having won the Europe Continental Cup and taking second at the World Cup in Chamonix. The 2019 European champs runner-up will be eager for her first title.

In the men's lead, keep an eye on other Olympians Adam Ondra and Alex Megos.

Germany's Hannah Meul, France's Oriane Bertone, Austria's Jessica Pilz and Serbia's Stasa Gejo are four names to watch out for in the women's boulder.

With a home crowd, Germany's Yannick Flohe and Maximillian Milne will be keen to impress in men's boulder. Olympic bronze medallist Jakob Schubert is another hoping to impress, along with Mickael Mawem. His brother Bassa will also be in action in the speed competition. Italy's Ludovico Fossali and Spain's Erik Noya Cardona will provide strong competition in this discipline.

In the women's speed event it's impossible to look past Poland’s Aleksandra Miroslaw who has had an incredible 2022 season so far. The 28-year-old has won the last three World Cup speed events and set three consecutive world records. Will we see her break 6.53 seconds in Munich?
