Skateboarding Park World Championships 2022 in 2023: Jagger Eaton qualifies for quarter-finals in first place - Hirano Ayumu out
Tokyo 2020 Olympians Steven Piniero, Kieran Woolley and Vincent Matheron joined the American in booking their place in the World Championship quarter-finals in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Beijing 2022 snowboard half-pipe champion Ayumu Hirano failed to advance.
United States' Jagger Eaton finished in pole position in the Men's Open qualifiers at the 2022 Skateboarding Park World Championships in 2023 on Thursday (9 February).
The 21-year-old from Mesa, Arizona, put down a score of 78.00 in his opening run to take first place ahead of reigning Japanese park champion Nagahara Yuro in second (75.33) and Brazilian Augusto Akio (74.00).
A total of 121 park skaters braved the breezy Aljada Skatepark bowl to try and secure a place in the next round but only 28 were allowed to advance.
Among those that didn't make through was Olympic snowboard half-pipe champion Hirano Ayumu, who also competed at Tokyo 2020 in park contest.
The United States saw seven of its skaters progress through to the quarter-finals with five occupying places in the top 10. Meanwhile, four Brazilians including Tokyo 2020 Olympian Pedro Quintas, also advanced.
Still yet to enter the competition are the skateboarders that were pre-seeded based on their Olympic World Skate Ranking. The group, made up of Heimana Reynolds, Cory Juneau, Pedro Barros and Keegan Palmer will join the action for the quarter-finals on Friday.
In addition to the world title, ranking points for Paris 2024 Olympic qualification available for skateboarders competing in Sharjah.
The competition will continue tomorrow with the Women and Men's quarter-finals beginning at 12:35 local time (UTC +4).
