Athletes from the People's Republic of China continued their Paris 2024 shooting success, as Xie Yu secured the 10m air pistol men's Olympic gold medal on 28 July.

Following China's victory in the 10m air rifle mixed team event, Xie secured another gold at the Châteauroux Shooting Centre with a composed and fearless performance that earned him the first gold in this event for a Chinese athlete since 2008.

The 24-year-old accumulated a score of 240.9, surpassing Italy's Federico Nilo Maldini, who finished with 240 points. Paolo Monna, also from Italy, earned the bronze with a total of 218.6 points.

“I’m really proud. I trained a lot this year to achieve this medal. When I played the single shot later (the elimination series, after 12 shots), the emotions gradually condensed. I had good control over myself today. I woke up calm, without any stress. I was a little bit nervous but didn’t have any fear.”

Reflecting on his win, Xie noted that while the victory was significant, his focus would immediately shift to upcoming events, including the mixed team competition where he hopes to continue China's streak.

As for the silver and bronze medallists, the Italians couldn't be happier. "I have no regrets," Maldini said. "Both of the others had excellent performances, and I am extremely pleased for my teammate (Monna). I don’t think we have any regrets.”

“It is very special to do this together,” Monna agreed.
