Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce opts out of 100m in Luzern after feeling discomfort in warm-up
One of the final steps towards Paris 2024 was not to be on Tuesday (16 July) for Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
The 36-year-old, a three-time Olympic champion, was due to race the women's 100m at the Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern in Switzerland, but said she "felt something" during pre-race warm-ups.
Luzern was meant to be one of the final stops for Fraser-Pryce, who has said Paris will be her final Games in what is a fifth Olympic appearance for the track legend.
Champion in the 100m at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, Faser-Pryce has led a legendary era of women's sprinting for Jamaica that has also featured Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shericka Jackson and others.
While Thompson-Herah has withdrawn from Paris due to injury, both Fraser-Pryce and Jackson sealed their spots at the Games last month with successful outings at Jamaican trials, where Fraser-Pryce opted to focus only on the 100m.
Zoe Hobbs of New Zealand clocked the fastest time of the day in Luzern at 11.17, while Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland went 11.20 to win her heat and finish second overall. See a full list of results from the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver stop here.
It was meant to be Fraser-Pryce's first international race of the season. Athletics gets underway on 1 August in Paris.
