Top-flight football action from Italy returns on August 21 with the Serie A 2021-22 season opener between champions Inter Milan and Genoa.

A string of high-profile arrivals and departures promises an exciting Serie A season ahead.

For defending champions Inter Milan, things are set to get difficult this season after the transfer of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea and Achraf Hakimi to PSG.

Coach Antonio Conte’s exit also adds to Inter’s woes.

On the other hand, Inter’s city rivals AC Milan will be hoping to repeat their stellar run from the previous edition that saw them return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2013-2014.

The Rossoneri have recruited Oliver Giroud to join Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the final third and replaced goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with Mike Maignan, who won the Ligue 1 with Lille last season.

However, the 39-year-old Zlatan’s fitness could play a huge role in AC Milan’s quest for the title. The Swede missed a significant number of games last season due to injuries.

All this bodes well for Juventus, who are expected to do better than their fourth-place finish last season.

The return of former coach Massimiliano Allegri, under whom the Bianconeri lifted the Scudetto - Serie A trophy - for five consecutive seasons (2014-2019), should bolster their chances.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, who was tipped to leave Juventus this transfer window, possibly staying back, the Old Lady will be well-equipped to recapture the Italian title with the Portuguese ace leading their forward line. Watch Serie A live streaming in India!

Another team that has seen a change in manager is AS Roma. Jose Mourinho has arrived in Rome with an aim to guide the Giallorossi to the top four, after they failed to clinch a European berth last season.

Roma have signed young striker Tammy Abraham from Chelsea after losing Edin Dzeko to Inter.

Atalanta, Lazio and Napoli are the other teams which are expected to be in the top five.

The three teams that were promoted to the top-flight this season are Empoli, Salernitana and Venezia.
