Indian tennis player Sania Mirza began her US Open 2021 campaign on a disappointing note, losing her women’s doubles opening round match in New York on Thursday.

Sania Mirza, a wildcard entry to the event, and her American partner Coco Vandeweghe suffered a 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 loss against Romania’s Raluca Olaru and Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine - the 12th seeds at the event.

The Indo-American duo began their match well. Sania Mirza-Coco Vandeweghe won 81 per cent of the first serves and kept their opponents on the backfoot.

Raluca Olaru and Nadiia Kichenok, however, managed to keep the set alive until the 10th game but Sania-Coco eventually won it 6-4.

The 12th seeds regrouped soon to take the fight to Sania Mirza and Coco Vandeweghe in the second set.

Raluca Olaru and Nadiia Kichenok dug deep to hold on to their serve in the opening game and then followed it up with a break in the second. Though they lost the advantage soon after, another break in the fifth game saw them take a decisive lead before wrapping up the set 6-4.

In the third set, Sania Mirza and Coco Vandeweghe were thoroughly outplayed as Raluca Olaru and Nadiia Kichenok raced to a comfortable 6-3 win in the decider to move into the second round at the US Open.

Earlier, Divij Sharan and Ankita Raina, too, bowed out of the US Open 2021 following losses in their respective doubles matches.

Sania Mirza will be in action in mixed doubles, where she will team up with Rajeev Ram of the USA. The duo takes on Germany’s Kevin Krawietz and Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic in the first round on Friday.
