Team Ireland’s Rory McIlroy is looking to end his decade-long wait for a major title at Paris 2024.

Golf has been back at the Olympic Games since Rio 2016, having been absent for 112 years prior to its return.

It makes a gold medal in this discipline extremely rare – and for McIlroy, it would rank among a career-high achievement if he is able to top the podium.

“It would be the achievement, certainly of the year,” the Northern Irishman said.

“I think for me, it’s well documented that I haven’t won one of the big four [major championships] in 10 years.

“It would probably be one of, if not the biggest in my career for the last [decade].”

After a disappointing showing in the Open at Royal Troon earlier this month, he is fully focused on bouncing back here in Paris.

“I want to make sure I’m right where I need to be teeing off on Thursday,” he added.

“I’ve been asked this question a lot – where would an Olympic medal sit in the hierarchy of my career achievements – and it’s something I probably won’t be able to answer until everything is said and done.”

Men’s golf begins with Round 1 on Thursday (01 August).
