Having secured Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the club after 12 years, Manchester United will be on the road to face Wolverhampton Wanderers for their Premier League 2021-22 matchweek 3 fixture at the Molineux on Sunday.
In a dramatic turn of events on August 27, the Red Devils pulled off a thrilling transfer deal to bring club legend Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester from Italian side Juventus.
The 36-year-old Ronaldo had been widely linked with United’s arch-rivals Manchester City but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed to sign the Portuguese star late on Friday.
Cristiano Ronaldo had a sensational first spell (2003-2009) with United during which he scored 118 goals in 292 games and established himself as one of the top footballers in the world.
However, the Portuguese maestro won’t be playing against Wolves this weekend. Ronaldo will only join Manchester United after the international break and may take the field against Newcastle United on September 11.
But the transfer alone will be a huge boost for the club as well as the fans.
The 20-time Premier League champions are currently sixth on the EPL points table, following their 1-1 draw at Southampton last week. Although Manchester United dropped points at the St. Mary’s, they are now unbeaten in 27 away matches in the league and have equalled the record of Arsenal’s Invincibles side from 2003-04.
Manchester United will be hoping to win all three points against Wolves. The match will also mark Ole’s 100th Premier League match as the Red Devils’ manager.
New signing Raphael Varane could make his first appearance for the club and join Harry Maguire at centre-back while Jadon Sancho will also be pushing for his first start.
First game’s hat-trick hero Bruno Fernandes will lead the attack, with support from Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood.
Wolves, on the other hand, will be aiming for their first win of the new season, having lost the first two matches by a 1-0 margin. Bruno Lage’s men are one of the three sides (along with Arsenal and Norwich) who are yet to find the back of the net this campaign.
In the other big fixtures of gameweek three, Manchester City host Arsenal and Liverpool welcome Chelsea.
The Wolves vs Manchester United match will be played on Sunday and will start at 9:00 PM IST.
